Dember's Other Animals

Skylar
Male Canary

I adopted Skylar from our local family-run pet store about a year ago. He was nearly eaten twice after Spike, the gray tabby knocked over his cage and let him loose in our house. Funnily enough, it wasn't Spike who nearly swallowed him, but Shadey and Boxcar, our dogs.

Shadey had him as far as her mouth before I smacked her on the rump and screamed "spit that out" before she looked confused and ejected him onto the carpet, covered in drool. Directly after that, Boxcar ran over and snatched him up and I had to pry her jaws open to get him out.

Miraculously, Skylar was completely uninjured through the whole ordeal, but obviously shaken up. About a day after that, he had apparently adjusted to our house well, and began singing, from his cage that is now thankfully affixed to our ceiling instead of sitting on a stand in the corner of the room.

Sugar
Female Parakeet

Sugar was one of the many animals that just showed up at our house out of nowhere. Like Toffles, my kitty, she appeared about a day after our neighbors had moved away -- but not the same ones that had owned him. Nope, yet another neighbor of ours moved, and left a family member behind -- this time, a rather noisy but adorable parakeet whom I've taken in and named 'Sugar'.

It's very interesting to watch her squawk loudly and noisily, or whistle and mimic everything she hears -- mainly wolf-whistling and 'uh-oh', then to have Skylar hop over next to her cage and begin singing, trying to outdo her, or at least teach her how to sing 'properly'.

If anyone could tell me what breed of parakeet she is, I'd really appreciate it. I don't know a ton about birds, but it would be interesting to know what kind she is. Technically, the same goes for Skylar, too. I know their species, but not their specific breeds. xDD

Midnight - "Middy"
Male Mini-Rex Dwarf Rabbit

I adopted Middy from our local pet store about four or five years ago. I can't remember the exact date, but it was about a year after I got Shadey, if I remember right -- I had him a few months before I got Toffles, so he should be around five now.

Middy's awesome. He'll run away from anyone except me, and he loves me to bring him fresh vegetables, especially lettuce and carrots. His favorite is celery, but he only gets it occasionally when we're making fresh soup, as it has to be cut into tiny chunks. It's always the first thing to be eaten when we give him the leftovers from our vegetable beef soup ingredients. :3

He really missed Boots when he passed away, and although poor old Chipper helped him move on, now Chipper's gone, too, and he's a bit lonely. I'd love to adopt a nice young girl bunny to befriend him if I weren't afraid they might breed through the bars of the hutch. XD

Periwinkle and Mocha
Female Guinea Pigs

Peri and Mocha get a section together. They were only cagemates, not sisters sisters, but they were so close, you would have thought they were. They only lived about three or four years, and although most only live about five or six, it was still a sad day. Periwinkle had a heart attack and died in front of me, and Mocha followed her within about ten minutes to half an hour later.

I was so frightened and freaked out, not knowing what happened, it calmed me down a bit when our vet told us that it was 'normal' for a guinea pig to die out of depression or shock of losing a beloved cagemate, but..I still miss them. I really loved my little cavies, and I miss bringing them fresh veggies a few times a week, and holding them and listening to Peri grunt, squeak and make little 'buii' calling noises.

They were really sweet girls, and I hope to eventually get more guinea pigs some day.

Pixidust and Cinnamon
Female Syrian Cinnamon-Banded Hamster
Female Syrian Golden Satin Hamster

Pixi and Cinnamon only lived with me for about a year each before they were rehomed. I've never met a hamster who has been fond of me, and most either run away and hide in their cage, or give me a bite on the finger and assume step number one. These two lived out their lives with two of my friends, and I got to visit them any time I felt like it -- but the hams didn't seem to enjoy it much when I did. XD

That's the reason I gave both of my hams away -- because I've yet to meet one that seems to enjoy my company, but I hope one day that will eventually change, because I would love to get a Black Dominant Spot and a Tricolor hamster, but of course, that could be many years down the line. n_n
